Lieutenant Junior Grade Shirley Pilkey currently serves as the Equal Opportunity Advisor within Region 1 Zone 2 of the U.S. Coast Guard Civil Rights Directorate. She is responsible for providing support on EO/EEO matters to all Commands, CG members and employees as well as conduct Civil Rights Awareness training in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

LTJG Pilkey has over 17 years of professional experience in higher education settings in both administrative and academic roles. Prior to her current EAD contract, she served as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York in Purchase, NY. At SUNY Purchase, she designed, developed and implemented curriculum for Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Portuguese courses offered at Purchase as well as an introductory course in Latin American studies. She also held positions at the Transfer Student, Special Programs and Admissions Departments of University of California in Santa Cruz, CA, New York University in New York City and Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.

Prior to commissioning in the U.S. Coast Guard, LTJG Pilkey served as Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Her assignments in the Air Force included the 42nd Combat Communication Squadron where she served as a SATCOM operator and technician, and 514th Air Mobility Wing where she served as Client Systems Technician and Project Manager.

LTJG Pilkey holds a Master of Arts degree in Sociology of Education from New York University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin American and Latino Studies from University of California Santa Cruz, and an Associate of Science degree from the Community College of the Air Force.

LTJG Pilkey is originally from Brazil, however, currently she resides in Fairfield, CT with her husband Kerry and their daughter Sarah.
