Alex Wang decided to apply to UConn’s Department of Public Policy (DPP) because of the support network at the DPP. He cites opportunities for professional development events, graduate certificate options, funding and the DPP’s Internship and Professional Practice (IPP) Program behind his decision to apply. To Alex, “… the structure of the DPP curriculum provides students with a smooth transition to their post-graduate endeavors.”
Alex chose to pursue a Master of Public Policy (MPP) because he believes the program’s principles align with him on both an academic and personal level. He explains, “I think there’s a lot wrong with the world that ought to be fixed through effective policy, and effective policy requires an analytical approach that’s based on empirical evidence.” In addition to an MPP, Alex will also be earning a Graduate Certificate in Public Financial Management.
Currently Alex is completing a Graduate Assistantship as a Research Assistant (RA) with Professor Eric Brunner. As an RA, he conducts research and writes literature reviews. Most recently he has been collecting information on recent adoptions and major reforms of states’ school facility funding policies.
After graduation Alex hopes to work in policy analysis in the public sector. He says, “The dream would be to do any kind of work in connection to causes that I feel are deeply important like expansion of social safety nets, equitable distribution of resources, and promotion of community reinvestment.”
