This summer, incoming Master of Public Administration (MPA) student and former Fast-Track John Kelly (MPA ‘22) is interning in the Office of Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz.
In this position he assists in various tasks, including handling constituent outreach and helping draft citations. Through this internship with the Lieutenant Governor, John has learned a great deal about the functions of state government and the direct role it can play in addressing issues and congratulating successes. The verbal communication and writing skills central to many DPP classes have been helpful for him in this position, as effective collaboration and writing is necessary. This experience has strengthened his commitment to public service, as he has seen how government can work for people in a practical sense.
In the fall John will intern with the Department of Criminal Justice as a Data Analyst, where he will be able to further develop and apply his analytical skills. This internship reflects his passion for equitable criminal justice reform, which he plans on further pursuing in law school. Using the public policy knowledge gained through his time at UConn, John hopes to develop legal skills to advocate for policy change and implement this in the legal system.
